GOBA 1998 Ride Report
By Dan and Alex Sheridan

My son Alex (age 11) and I rode the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) together this year.  We had a great time, enjoying a relaxing adventure together.  This was Alex's second GOBA. We rode together in 1996, a trip that Alex says was the "second best days of his life." (A July 4th Cleveland Indians game ranked first).

The weather was hot and humid for most of the week, with temperatures often reaching the 90 to 95 degree range.  We carried bathing suits with us on our bikes, and made five swim stops along the way.  Twelve of us from the Heart of Ohio Tailwinds Bicycle Club made the trip:  Jan, Allan, Lucy, Mike, Janine, Tom, Bob, Joan, Jane, and Sherry. Tom made colorful "Team Hot" tee shirts for us that drew many favorable comments.

We arrived at the Celina campground late Saturday afternoon and set up camp with the other members of Team Hot.  We spent the evening renewing acquaintances and exploring Celina, a pretty town on the shores of Grand Lake St. Marys.  We watched a mandatory bicycle safety video, bought some official GOBA gear, then rode into town to pick up our free Bob Evans water bottle and visit an ice cream social.  There was also a bicycle parade.  Janine continued to amaze us with the sheer number of GOBA friends that she has made in her 5 GOBAs.

Sunday morning we rose early and were on the road at about 7:30.  We did a brief detour along the lake to see racing boats and the lighthouse, then joined the route for a ride along the north shore of the lake.  We passed a state park campground, a marina,  and a beach.  After rolling by a fish farm, we turned away from the lake and headed for the town of New Bremen.  Along the way we stopped at a farmyard where two large cows were held on leashes in the front yard for riders to pet.  In New Bremen we visited the Bicycle Museum of America and an old canal lock.  Back on the road, we lunched at a high school and then hit the beach at Lake Loramie State Park.  We finished the ride in Sidney, a town with some interesting architecture.
