The week's only heavy rain came during the night as we slept, and we rose to a cool, damp day. A very pleasant surprise was the presence of boy scouts with wheelbarrows to help us take our luggage to the luggage trucks. A few miles out of Brookville we came across a sidewalk chalk welcome "Good morning, Alex!" At the first food stop Channel 10's "Kids News network" was filming, and they got a good 5 second shot of Alex as he rolled out of the stop.
A few miles later we walked our only hill of the week, but it was with a twist--this was a steep DOWNHILL with gravel at the bottom. We rode through rolling terrain, speeding down a long hill into the valley town of Camden for lunch. At the top of a tough hill after lunch, we found the chalk message "Alex is my man!". We rode through beautiful hills, ending in Hueston Woods State Park. Alex and I played in the water at the beach for several hours, before enjoying an ice cream cone and reluctantly heading for camp.
We glided into Oxford under an arch of balloons, and quickly came to a lemonade stand. The children were out of cups, and instead offered to fill our water bottles. They quickly realized that the water bottles were much bigger than their usual cups, and a young man sprinted down the street for more cups from home. We rode down a bumpy brick street to the campground, and found that our friends had saved us a choice spot next to the football field. After a delicious and filling spaghetti dinner with friends from Upper Sandusky, we walked uptown to watch the Ohio Cup bicycle races with Tom Rusnak. Alex especially enjoyed standing near the winner's stand and getting doused with champagne.
